Irrigation Ditch Time

Toddler ages: 28 months, 28 months, 4 years

Materials you'll need:
-an irrigation ditch

We are fortunate enough to be able to water our lawn via irrigation. The water comes from a ditch that runs by our house, protected by a chain link fence. It enters our yard via a round hole in the brick below the fence...,

Photobucket

...and with close adult supervision, this became a memorable activity.

The kids started by simply standing and playing in the rushing water...

Photobucket

Photobucket

...then the 4-year-old boy had an unexpectedly ingenious idea. He went over to the garden, picked a few carrots...

Photobucket

...put them, one at a time, through the holes in the chain link fence...

Photobucket

...then watched as they traveled down the ditch...

Photobucket

...and through the hole, back into our yard...

PhotobucketPhotobucket

He had his hand waiting to retrieve them...

Photobucket

...and when he did, they were perfectly clean and ready for his brothers to eat...

Photobucket

The trick worked with the beets, too...

Photobucket

Who woulda thought? If you don't have your own irrigation ditch, come on over. We have plenty of fun for everyone.
